10 Repurposed Accessory Storage Ideas

10 Repurposed Accessory Storage Ideas

I love accessories (jewelry, hair pins, headbands, etc.) and I have a lot of great pieces, but I don’t like my accessory storage: a cloth bag. Earrings get lost, necklaces get tangled, the headbands are always in the way, and I forget what pieces I have in the first place. What about you? Have you made our DIY Crochet Lace Necklace, our Vegan Jewelry, or our 5 Minute Headband and now you just need something to display your creations? Well, this week I decided it would be a great time to find some solutions for all of our beautiful jewelry. The following are 10 incredible projects that were created to showcase and organize our jewelry collections and are made with repurposed items!

As you all know from my Chocolate Heart Box Wall Art post, I love the idea of repurposing chocolate boxes. If you still have chocolate boxes from Valentine’s Day, make your own ring holder! The chocolate box will look adorable on your dresser or it can fit perfectly in a drawer.

The website this is linked to is in another language, but this idea is just too cute not to feature! I like the rustic feel of the box with the bottles inside too. You could even place your bottles on your dresser or nightstand instead of hanging them up on the wall.

Halloween Costume Ideas For Adults

Halloween costumes can be great fun even for adults. In fact, why should kids have all the fun? Dressing up during Halloween can be equally entertaining for adults. Of course, you will not go out "trick-or-treat-in" but you can invite your friends and have a gala time partying Halloween style.

When it comes to adult Halloween costumes, you have to think a bit outside the box. The idea here is to choose something that goes with your personality or theme. For women, it can be doubly fun because they can easily take this opportunity to dress sexily as a fantasy or fictional character.

There are also quite a few naughty adult costumes for men and women that are sure to get a lot of attention and/or laughs. These are great for gags at Halloween parties. Although, you have to be a bit daring for these even though it is all in harmless fun.

Choosing a costume that somehow reflects your personality or a hobby is even better. For example, if you are a great Spiderman fan, people will expect you to dress up like Spiderman for Halloween. What they will not expect is for you to dress up like Peter Parker with the famous Spiderman costume sticking out from underneath an unbuttoned shirt. Thinking along a different line will often land you with a great costume idea. And unusual costumes always attract attention. They are like puzzles waiting to be solved. An unusual costume can be a great way to start up a conversation, no matter which side is wearing it.

Adult Halloween costumes always have space for innovation and a great way to innovate is through mixing and matching costumes. You can take parts of older costumes and buy some new accessories to put together a custom costume based on your ideas. This is a great way to ensure that you wear a unique costume. Nothing can be more disappointing than finding someone else wearing the same costume at a Halloween party. It can get especially bad if you don't like the other person and people start getting confused between the two of you.

Hence, it always pays to put some thought in to your Halloween costume. You can do this by staying away from the obvious choices like the characters from the latest sci-fi blockbuster or the latest fantasy novel. You also need to stay away from the stereotypes because you can rest assured that someone or the other will be dressing up as a cowboy or a Roman warrior.

Instead of doing the obvious, get to a good costumes store and start searching through their catalog. Doing this at a physical store might be very time-consuming and frustrating. Especially because you might not always find a good costumes store near you. This is why your best bet will be an online store. Online stores usually have a huge catalog of costumes and you can look through their vast collection of accessories and costumes in your own time. So if inspiration strikes you in the dead of the night, you know where to look.

Halloween Costumes - Safety Concerns For Young Children

When purchasing or making Halloween costumes for young children, it is important to be observant of possible safety concerns, to ensure a happy and safe Halloween.

When choosing an Infant Halloween Costume for your young child or baby, comfort and safety are top of the list!

If a baby or toddler is not comfortable, they will not be able to enjoy the Halloween experience and are more likely to be upset.

Safety considerations are important in making a choice of costume, and the safety considerations are even more important when the costume is for a young child or baby. Some important things to be wary of are:

* Be sure the costume is free from small pieces that could get detached and might therefore create the potential of a choking hazard for a little ones.

* Also, for similar reasons, avoid costumes with cords or tassels which might pose a hazardous risk of strangulation.

* Check labels for flame retardant material. Some materials can be extremely flammable! During Halloween there can be bare flame from candles which could have the potential of ignition.

* By choosing a fabric that is soft and comfortable, the young child is more likely to be feeling comfortable and the occasion is therefore more likely to be a happy day for all!

* The weather and climate for your area should also be considered. For a warmer climate, it is best not to overdress an infant in a furry costume. And of course, baby should not be under-dressed and cold either.

* Changing diapers could be a bit complex with some costumes. It is best to select a costume that will give easy access to facilitate diaper changes.

* If travel by car is part of your Halloween experience, it will be necessary to secure baby for car travel. Will the baby be able to be properly secured in the car for traveling when they are wearing the costume, or will they need costume adjustments or clothing changes?

* Consider the size of the costume and the fit. Is it snug, or loose? A loose fit may result in baby sliding down within the costume. A tight fit may cause discomfort.

* For all children, but particularly so, if the young one is just starting to toddle, or still unsure on their feet, then be attentive that the costume is not impeding their movement and may possibly cause falls.

* Halloween, like other festivities, can be a tiring time for young children, so it is wise to ensure that they have been able to be well rested before Halloween Celebrations.

* Toddlers and young children can be frightened by Halloween events so, if they are at a talking age, talk to them before about dressing up and pretending, and also have an alternate plan in case the occasion is just too much for them. If they become distressed with the event, there should be a safe haven for them. If you have other children in the family that may be wanting to continue with their Halloween, perhaps you can have an alternative back-up such as the Grandparents to mind the baby or toddler if they are becoming too overwhelmed with everything, or if they are just getting too tired.

Happy Halloween!

Adult Halloween Costumes - To Dress Up Or Not to Dress Up?

Adult Halloween costumes are a tricky business. Once you reach a certain age, some people find the whole celebration thing a bit juvenile. Others happily don their unique outfits with more enthusiasm than some children display. The big question is "do I dress up for Halloween?" The choices for adult Halloween costumes are vast. However, the first step is determining whether or not it is worth your time, and possibly your dignity, to get dressed up at all.

The company you keep might help you decide this all-important, yearly question. Do you have a regular tradition of picking out an outfit with your best bud to wear at their Halloween get together? If so the answer is easy.

Where will you be seen in your costume, and how many times will you have to wear your tights and wig around Halloween? Some people dress up every chance they get, wearing the latest trendy adult Halloween costumes to work, school, and holiday parties. If you have plenty of places to don your once a year look, then by all means, dive right in.

Work and Halloween costumes do not always mix well. Depending on your profession, you may be unable to wear anything different, even on this special day. If you are lucky enough to be able to dress up, be mindful of who will see you and choose your look accordingly. Women may find that some costumes are a little too revealing to wear in to the office. Search for a women's costume that will not viewed as offensive. The same could be said for the guys, although this seems to be less frequently a problem for men's outfits.

Guys will still have to watch out for any inappropriate messages their costume may convey. A men's costume that features off color language or a racy joke should probably be left at home or saved for a friend's Halloween party.

Consider the amount of space you have at your place of employment as well. If you work in a tight cubical, you should keep your costume small. An adult Halloween costume does not necessarily have to be a full body affair. A simple headband with cute ears, or maybe a little face paint, could be enough to feel festive without becoming intrusive to your coworkers.

This same principal can be applied to Halloween parties. If you must, ask your host or hostess who will be in attendance. Even if the gathering was purely adults in previous years. You never know when someone may bring along little Johnny or Susie this year because no sitter was available.

Did you enjoy feeling like a complete fool last year when you showed up at the get together in a gaudy clown suit, to find that no one else dressed up for the occasion? Remember, it never hurts to ask ahead of time if anyone else will be celebrating with a costume. It could save you a bit of embarrassment, unless of course, you have no concern for the opinions of others. In which case, more power to you!

Adult Halloween costumes can be just as much fun as any children's costumes. Choose something that fits your personality, yet is appropriate for who will see you. Following a few simple tips can help streamline your holiday and prevent you from falling into any social Halloween traps. Have fun with adult Halloween costumes, but do so responsibly.

Project Show-and-Tell: An Upcycled Smash Book for My Anniversary

Altered book made for an anniversary

In the fifteen years that my partner and I have been together, he has suffered through many gift exchanges. For Christmas last year, he gave me a new laptop computer and I gave him a scratchblock for an upcoming aluminum pour. For our birthdays last year, he gave me a book I’d been wanting and a gift card to our local indie sewing machine store, and I gave him the promise of a Star Wars T-shirt quilt…that I still haven’t finished (oops!).

Handmade has finally equalized the gift exchange, however. For our recent anniversary, Matt gave me the panini press that I’d really, really, really been wanting, and I gave him a smash book, altered from an old children’s book, that chronicles our fifteen years together.

If you’ve read Mahe’s post on upcycled smash books (if you haven’t, then go do it now!), then you know that smash books are quicker, easier, and more creatively amenable to recycled components than traditional scrapbooks can be, and frankly I much prefer the look of a smash book to that of your typical carefully engineered scrapbook. If you’d like some more examples, then please feel free to take a look below at my own upcycled smash book–it’s by no means perfect, but the beauty of a smash book is that it isn’t meant to be perfect. Instead, it’s meant to be meaningful, fun, crafted with lots of upcycled materials and stash components, and beloved by its recipient.

And that it is!

page from an upcycled anniversary smash bookTo make my particular upcycled smash book, I grabbed an old children’s book from my stash, one that I’d acquired for free from some local book sale or thrift store or somewhere. I made sure that the binding was still sturdy and that the pages were still firmly attached to the binding and in good shape–brittle pages wouldn’t hold up to all the stuff I’m going to throw on them, and a book with a broken binding is just going to fall apart on you while you’re working.

Some pages of the book, I gessoed and then painted with artist’s acrylics. Some pages I colored over with Prismacolor colored pencils or markers, to allow the background text and illustrations to show through without being overwhelming. Some pages I completely decoupaged with other paper, such as vintage sheet music or my daughters’ artwork. Some pages I covered completely with fabric or novelty duct tape. And some pages I did nothing to. The rest of the pages, consisting of over half of the book, I cut or ripped completely out, to give more room to the three-dimensional embellishments that I knew I was going to add. Those pages went straight to my vintage papers bin, ready and waiting for a future project.

Creative, Quick And Easy Adult Halloween Costume Ideas

Creative Halloween Costume Ideas

Each year you are given the opportunity to show your creativity with your Halloween costume ideas. The possibilities are nearly limitless once your creative juices start to flow. Creative Halloween costume ideas can be grouped into several sub categories. This article includes a few suggestions to help you get your creative juices flowing.

Halloween Costume Ideas On a Budget

When you are decorating yourself or your kids for the holiday and you don't want to break the bank, start with what you have in the house. A Gypsy costume can be made simply by layering all of the necklaces you own and layering several skirts or putting scarves on as skirts as well as putting on a bit of make-up. Ghosts can be made of a sheet or pillowcase and a pair of scissors. Clown costumes are easily made of a sweat outfit and make-up. A multi-colored wig is fairly inexpensive. Dressing up like a bum is always fun too. Jeans, old T-shirt, torn jacket or flannel shirt, and a handkerchief tied to a stick (carrying your candy stash of course) all help you pull off this look. A bit of grime or stubble can be painted onto the face and this costume is complete.

Unique Halloween Costume Ideas

There are so many different ways to dress up for Halloween. If you put your mind to it there are many things you have around the house that can make up a unique costume. You can dress up as a head on a platter by putting a table cloth on card board and gluing paper picnic settings to it then put it on so that it goes around your neck and you can only see your head sticking out of the center. This takes very little work but the reactions you get will be amazing.

There are many other ideas but the most unique often happen when you really put your mind to work seeking the rare.

Sexy Halloween Costume Ideas

Dressing up like a French maid or a playboy bunny is always fun. Some of the best sexy Halloween costume ideas start with a favorite movie star. If you can think of someone you like to watch on the big screen you can dress like a character they play in your favorite movie. Dressing up like Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie or George Clooney can be fun and make you feel sexy and perhaps even a bit playful at your Halloween party.

Couples Costume ideas

When you and a friend or your significant other go to a party as a couple it can be fun to dress up like your favorite duo. These can be male/female couples or others like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid can be fun. An angel and the Devil together is always a way to make a statement. Newly weds going as a bride and groom don't always go over as well as you would think. Stick with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell or other characters who are usually together.

Group costume ideas

Groups of friends dressing up as the Three (or more) Musketeers, Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends, groups of Zombies, and your favorite rock band lets others at the party know you are together. Groups of witches and wizards from specific houses at Hogwarts are fun too, especially if you can get cousins together and each family dress up in costumes from a different house. Group costumes can be fun to think up and design together.

Whatever costumes you choose have fun coming up with your Halloween costume ideas. Let your hair down and see how creative you can be. If you already have your costume ideas for this year it isn't too late to start thinking up ways to win the costume contest next year.

Halloween Costumes to Make For Baby - Great Infant Halloween Costumes Ideas

One of the most fun things about Halloween for Baby are the costumes. But costumes for Baby these days can be so expensive! It seems like such a shame to spend all of that money on something your child will only wear once. Fortunately there are costumes you can make for your child. You can create a fun and adorable Halloween costume for your kid, even if you aren't the "crafty" type.

Begin by "shopping" in your child's closet. Every child has their own personal style, likes and dislikes. As you look through your child's closet, a costume idea may come to you. Have a piece of paper and pen with you as you go through the closet to brainstorm your ideas. A girl or boy in dance classes could easily wear their dance costumes as a Halloween costume - to be a ballerina or another fun costume without other needed accessories. Other ideas may come to you as you look through your child's closet.

If your child is "crafty" involve them in the making of their costume as this is a fun activity for Baby. An easy costume to make is a pumpkin costume wearing a large orange sweatshirt and a green baseball cap with some green felt leaves on it. A crafty child will have fun making a costume.

Think of your child's hobbies and interests as these may lead to a costume. The child who loves The Animal Planet show could be an animal wrangler, with safari outfit and a stuffed animal. A scientific child could have funny looking glasses, hair sticking out with gel to make them look like a "mad scientist." It is ideal to have a costume that shows your child's personality, hobbies and interests in some way.

A clown costume is easy to make. Go to the dollar store and buy a $5 bunch of balloons (5 balloons for $1 each usually). Make a clown face on your child's face with makeup from the drugstore available for Halloween. Dress them in bright clothing. This is a fun costume for boys or girls.

Some children may be interested in a career. They may want to be a newspaper reporter or dress like a soldier in the army or a fashion model. These are all costumes you can accessorize their current clothing with features to make them look fun. The newspaper reporter would have a newspaper and a stenograph sized notebook with a pen. Newspaper reporters tend to dress kind of "preppy" and they could ask for a quote or the real story. A soldier would dress in army fatigues or camouflage. This could be enhanced with Halloween makeup at the drugstore. A fashion model could wear a trendy outfit and some minor cosmetics. Add some costume jewelry and/or a pair of  high heels. Have her or him pose for their photo as they Trick or Treat.

Making costumes for Baby can be easy and fun once you realize the options available to you. Once you start to look you may discover there are several costume ideas in front of you. For best results, involve your child in the costume decision making as they will get excited and want to wear the chosen costume even more now that they have had a hand in creating it. They will have pride wearing their Halloween costume that is special and unique.

Cool Halloween Costume Ideas For Costume Contests

If you're planning to make your own Halloween costumes, that's a great idea! Under one condition: The condition, of course, is that you're good at that kind of thing. If you're handy with crafts, and have the ability to visualize a creation and actually bring it to life, then making a them from scratch is the best idea for you.

The rest of us, however, aren't so handy with a sewing machine or quite frankly, with making things in general (That is, making things besides a big mess and an ugly costume.) The end result is often little more than a wish that you had just decided to buy Halloween costumes instead of making them, so we've put together this buying guide for anyone who is looking for some tips to buy Halloween costumes that will still be unique.

Of course, you don't want to show up on Halloween in the same costume as somebody else, I mean, what if theirs is better than yours? The first tip if you're looking to buy Halloween costumes is to mix and match. This will ensure that you don't show up in the same store-bought costume as someone else. Don't be afraid to be creative, just because you want to buy Halloween costumes that doesn't mean you can't stand out and it also doesn't mean that you can't incorporate some creativity. Have fun with it, those are always the best costumes.

Okay, so mixing and matching, that's a great start, but what's next? You might be wondering where is the best place to buy Halloween costumes? The two default options are local shops, or online. The advantage to local shops is that you can try it on first, but these are Halloween costumes we're talking about, not wedding dresses, and they are generally very forgiving as far as sizing goes, so is it really worth paying a lot extra to pick it up locally? Also as you get closer and closer to the big day, the selection will become less and less, whereas online shops generally tend to have great selections all year-round.

You'll be rewarded for not waiting to the last minute to buy Halloween costumes, since ordering online is a great way to save money but it can take a few days to arrive. There are some great local costume shops that are well-stocked all year-round, as opposed to most stores which only carry costumes as a seasonal item. Again, you'll pay a premium for this selection, which you can avoid paying by shopping for a costume online. Online stores will always have a huge selection year-round, and often the best prices as well.

When you're browsing through a huge selection, and you also mix and match a little bit, it's not hard to buy Halloween costumes that will be unique and memorable. You'll be able to either pass down the extra accessories, or use them in other costumes for years to come so having a "Halloween Box" like we do in my home, where we collect all the odds and ends that make up costumes, can be a great idea. This is especially true if you have children who enjoy playing dress-up all year, not just at Halloween.

If you are looking for the coolest Halloween ideas for costumes, why not stop by Halloween 365-24/7 where it is Halloween all year!
At Halloween 365-24/7 we believe in keeping the spirit of Halloween alive throughout the entire year!

How-to: Make an Upcycled Smash Book

smash book

I love the new smash books from K and Company. They are such fun to work with. The different themes and papers are gorgeous, and I love that each page is a surprise. I got one of these books to document my journey in 2011 and have been hard at work filling that journal up. This year I wanted to make an upcycled smash book, rather than buy one that uses all new materials. Here’s how you can make your own!

Smash Books are basically pre-bound scrapbooks, but instead of plain pages, which can be daunting to fill, they have patterned papers and papers with sayings on them. The books are made from good quality card stock and can take a lot of memorabilia glued, taped or stapled to the pages.

The entire process of just adding pictures and memorabilia to the pages without bothering about the perfect layout and look is what is called ‘smashing.’ This makes these new smash books fun and easy to work with. The pages are beautifully coordinated and put together with an occasional ‘surprise’ page with a saying or picture that you would not expect. The books are coordinated with a lot of extras that you can buy as well, like pockets, stickers, and tabs.

Before you get started, you want to identify what you love about current smash books and set out to mimic that look using only upcycled materials. Sounds like a challenge, right? It is, but the results will be so fantastic that you won’t believe that all of these items were  destined for the trash can.

greeting cards Greeting cards make great embellishments for upcycled smash book pages.

Let’s start with what I love about the smash books:

The pages are all different and yet seem to come together because of an overall theme and color palette. They always contain a few unexpected pages, with big bold typography or a cute quote.

That is the look I want to mimic in my upcycled smash book. I love use upcycled materials in my projects, so I have a big box that is home to soda cans, plastic packaging, old books, old children’s picture books, interesting magazines and mailers…you name it, and I probably have it in my treasure chest. Here are a few ideas for upcycled materials that you can use in your smash book:

Catalogs and mailers. Junk mail catalogs just go in the bin after you’ve perused them. Instead, you can use mailers or pages from catalogues to make very interesting smash book pages!Art experiments gone bad. Prints I wasn’t crazy about from a print-making class will find their way into my upcycled smash book and will make awesome textured backgrounds.Old photographs. I love to take photographs and get a lot of my work printed in large sizes. Sometimes I end up framing the prints and other times they just make their way into my craft stash. Some of these photographs make really cool pages. I especially like the print shown above for use in my smash book. I cut the larger picture in two and used it to make one two page layout.Wedding invites or fun shaped cards. You can always add a layer of gesso or make a collage. They also work well as smaller pages, pockets, or inserts to add visual interest to the book. What I love about making my own smash book is that I can incorporate a lot of different paper with different colours and textures. I can also choose to add pockets and customize the folio to my needs.Raid your stash. I also have some papers in my scrapbooking stash that will work well.Reclaimed cardboard. This is for the cover.

You will also need:

Glue. You’ll want to use mod podge or a glue stick to smash your pages.Scissors. If you have other specialty paper cutting tools, like a die cutter or punches, you can use those on your smash book, too!

Now it’s time to dig into your stash and make that smash book. Plan to have about 40 pages in your book. That is the size the actual smash books are too.

1. Gather all the images you plan to use and cut pages out of them. I used a slightly smaller size than typical smash books, but you can pick any size you are comfortable working with. My only advice would be to keep it smaller than an A4 size to make sure the pages are sturdy enough to withstand all sorts of smashing.

pages for smash book Pages for my smash book, ready to be cut to size!

2. Punch your pages and bind them. Use a hole punch and 3 book rings to bind the book. Punch the holes on your first page, then stack your second page behind and use those first holes as guides to punch the next ones. This method will make sure your book ends up stacking evenly. Once the holes are punched, you can clip on the book rings to secure everything in place. What I love about using the book rings is that I can always go and add more pages if I feel I need to. There is a lot of room to play and experiment, add and subtract.

3. Make your cover. Cut out a cover that’s the same size as your pages out of your reclaimed cardboard and punch holes that match the holes on your pages. Then, you’re ready to decorate your cover. I covered the cover pieces in an old photograph print that had gotten creased and could not be used for anything else. The crease was very easy to conceal while covering the book.

4. Get smashing! The smash book is now ready for all your adventures and lots of smashing What are you going to document in your smash book?

I decided to use it to document my journey through 2012, so the first page I made in my book had highlights from an awesome day where I  just generally felt blessed and happy. The feeling was something I wanted to remember since I had been pretty tired lately and a little overwhelmed with massive to-do lists both at home and work. This felt like the perfect way to start my upcycled smash book. You can see what my first page looks like at the top of this post!

Making this page was quite a smashing experience.  Have an artsy day y’all! Hope you enjoyed this upcycling adventure :)

You can get ready-made cat Halloween costumes or buy them online at a low price. Before purchasing cat Halloween costumes, make sure they are suitable and fit well. If you want them to sustain for long term, check the quality of the costume. Remember to choose a member of a cat family and wear accordingly.

Cat costumes complemented by accessories and make up will give the complete look. Make sure your costume is different and likable. The most preferred cat Halloween outfit is a black jumpsuit which is made of polyester. Black is a strong colour and it reflects the vigor of a cat. It makes the wearer tall, slim and attractive.

The ears of a cat costume should be rightly placed and should not run to the head, as it could be disturbing. The tail in the costume is essential to give you an animalistic look.

Choose the length of the tail according to your height. For children, it has to be short while adults can have long tail for a funny look. The tail should be well set with the costume so that it doesn't drop while walking. You can make a tail with artificial fur and colour papers at home. You can also make use of wire and used tins for making your tail. Apply glue strongly for it to remain firmly.

The face should have clear cat eyes and numerous whiskers. Make up enhances your look. You could go for a simple or heavy make up. If you don't have time for a make up, go for a black leather mask covering half of the face leaving the eyes. This gives the mysterious cat look. For kitten costumes, use headdresses and put a black spot on the nose of the baby. With Broadway makeup styles you can get more shades for your nose.

Get high-heel shoes for your legs. Wear gloves with claw ends or set your fingers with artificial nails. You can wear belts with metal buckles. Carry a whip with you. It would display authority and power, and gathers attention at the party.

After you get your desirable look it is now time to be a real cat. Don't be someone in a cat costume, try to be a cat. Learn the behaviour, physical movements and sounds of a cat and display them. You could greet your audience with a 'meow'. Join your partners and family members with the cat costume. They could come with you in a dog or rat costume. It will turn out to be a good Halloween experience for you.

Halloween Costume Ideas - The Costume for Halloween Can Actually Be Based on a Few Simple Ideas

As soon as anyone mentions Halloween, it conjures up images of so many different things in your minds eye be it weird, wacky, ghoulish or grotesque. We all love to dress up at this particular time of year and really embrace the festivities whole heartedly. But, have you ever stopped to wonder why we do it and where we get our Halloween costume ideas from?

Believe it or not varying countries and cultures have celebrated Halloween in some way, shape or form for many centuries, which I found quite surprising. Maybe, like me it is something you have just grown up with and have never given it any more thought other than having a fantastic time trick or treating or enjoying a good Halloween party.

It seems strange to think that many of the costumes we wear today have been influenced by past traditions and cultures from days gone by. The idea of wearing something frightening was to actually keep bad spirits away whilst celebrating the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

There was also much feasting in communities and believe it or not, a form of trick or treating too. Of course today, we have added our own spin on things but the ideas behind what we do are still the same. Costume wise, just about anything goes and some of the Halloween costume ideas are just fantastic. I have been blown away by what I have seen and I thought I had a pretty good imagination when it came to that sort of thing.

Who would have thought that there were so many variations on a pumpkin Halloween costume? Loads of styles and designs that are just awesome. You can be the scary Jack o Lantern or a sassy, girly kind of pumpkin, no problem. For your little ones, such cute Halloween costumes the likes of which I have never seen before. As if that is not enough, you can even get a pumpkin Halloween costume for your dog, big or small, now how cool is that?

Another one that really catches the eye because of the phenomenal blues and greens of the colours that really capture the essence of the bird that the outfit depicts is a peacock Halloween costume. Wow, who ever thought up that one deserves a medal, just stunning and regardless of your shape or size, there seems to be one to cater for everybody's taste. I cannot imagine even the fussiest of people being anything other than totally impressed by them, for sure.

So, whether you fancy really embracing tradition and using Halloween costume ideas that are about upholding the symbolism and meaning behind Halloween itself or, you just want to go all out and be as wacky or weird as you like. You can make a dramatic impact on friends, family and your neighbours really easily and you will not be disappointed if you have a look through some of the Halloween costumes that are available online not only for inspiration, but major impact too.

Choosing a Unique Halloween Costume

Are you one of those people who absolutely love Halloween, but is always on the lookout for a costume that stands out from the crowd? Do you adore finding a costume that no one else has and will be a huge hit at your Halloween party? Hunting down the perfect costume is a big part of the fun for some people come Halloween, and a costume that everyone has seen before, or a theme that is as old as the holiday itself simply won't do for these Halloween aficionados! If you are one of them, take heart. There are plenty of beautiful, unique and undoubtedly sexy Halloween costumes out there to choose from that won't blend into any crowd!

The classics of Halloween will always be around, and for good reason. Witches, vampires and other creatures of the night are the foundation of the scary holiday. But Halloween has come a long way since the early days of ghosts and goblins, and it stands to reason that Halloween costumes should follow suit. There's no reason you can't choose a modern take on a classic look, and there are plenty of great costumes that do just that. But if you are one of those people who just has to be truly unique and different, finding a great costume that is out of the ordinary is not optional.

If you do want to get your hands on that perfect and unique costume, you had better get started early on your Halloween costume shopping. Because the more common costume choices sell better, stores stock more of them. That means that there are generally fewer unique choices in stock; if someone else happens upon the same flash of brilliance that you just had - only before you, that perfect Halloween costume might be gone before you can get your hands on it.

It can also take a little more time to go through all of the available costumes out there and select the right one. You can skip over all the categories that list the classics - usually the category you want is the one that lists all the costumes that defy categorization. After all, that's precisely what you are trying to do when you pick a totally unique Halloween costume.

There are so many costumes out there that choosing the right one can be daunting, but odds are you will know it when you see it! Whether it's a Star Trek costume or a sexy version of Minnie Mouse, take a little time to go through all the costumes before you decide - one might just jump out at you!

How to Create Great Halloween Costumes That Won't Break the Bank

If you are willing to be just a little bit creative this Halloween season, you should be able to come up with several Halloween costume ideas that will be fun for both you and your kids while not breaking your budget at the same time. Many of the most interesting Halloween costume ideas are also simple to put together and cheap to buy.

If your goal is to keep the Halloween costume for your child as cheap as possible for this year's Halloween activities, you are going to have to make the costume yourself. Start by thinking of what your child will be dressed as and then spend some time considering what materials you will need to make it a reality.

For example, assume that your son decides he would like to dress as a pirate for Halloween. One good first step is to search for pirate costumes online and find one that both you and your child like. Then, use that picture as a sort of guide for designing your own. But don't stop there. Add your own interesting details and accessories to make the costume unique. You can make a scary pirate's sword and a classic pirate's hat by using some cardboard and, in the case of the sword, aluminum foil.

Thrift stores are a great place to find Halloween costume accessories. A pirate modeled after Captain Jack Sparrow could be made especially fun with an eye patch or some makeup.

If your little daughter has her heart set on dressing as a princess, such as Snow White, you will probably run into a few more difficulties trying to make the costume at home for a lower price. In this case you will definitely need a good picture of the kind of costume your daughter wants so that you can make the costume as similar to it as possible. Make sure that the important parts of the costume that will most stand out are well done. Snow White, for example, would need good color coordination and the properly designed hair.

Cinderella's costume, on the other hand, relies heavily on the shoes and dress. Unfortunately, making a princess's dress is no easy task. Designing a dress made from pieces of clothing you already have can work, but keep in mind that it is sure to be quite time consuming as well, especially if you find that you need to make some changes to it after your daughter tries it on.

Of course, if making a costume by hand is not what you would call one of your skills, there are plenty of other ways that you can save money on this year's costumes. A vast number of costumes are put up for sale each year on eBay, where you may be able to find just what you are looking for at a good price.

Just taking some time to think about costume ideas will help you to find a cheap solution for your Halloween costume.

It's never too early to start planning your Halloween costumes for this year. Don't wait until it's too late and the good ones are all sold out. Get lots of fun costume ideas on the Get In Costume website, where you can also get a free copy of my report "The Family Guide To Halloween Safety."

Halloween Costumes: Colorful, Creepy And Cute

Dressing up is loads of fun, whether you're a kid or just a grown-up who's young at heart! And when it's time to go trick-or-treating, nothing makes the occasion more colorful than wacky and imaginative Halloween costumes.

Scary or sweet, a great costume helps you get right into the Halloween party spirit. And the wide range of fancy dress possibilities make it a celebration that everyone can take part in and enjoy.

If you're planning to wear a Halloween costume on October 31st this year, it will probably boil down to one of three choices: buy it, rent it or make it yourself. If you plan on renting, be sure to make your selection and reserve your costume early. It can seem like everybody has woken up to the fact that Halloween is coming just a few days before the event! So pip the competition to the post by getting into your rental store as soon as you can.

If you plan on buying a costume, it's still a good idea not to leave decisions to the last few days -- even though Halloween costume suppliers prepare for a sudden avalanche of customers for the annual spook-fest. You may find a Halloween party store that opens up just for the season in your neighborhood -- or you can find a big variety of costume ideas by shopping online. Don't forget to take into account the time needed to process an order as well as the number of days needed for shipping. Sure, you can most likely get your order express delivered -- but it'll cost you more.

If you live in a neighborhood where trick-or-treating is popular, you'll probably have noticed that some of the most charming Halloween costumes are the ones that people have made themselves. The good news is that a busy parent doesn't necessarily have to be an expert seamstress or tailor to be able to create a cute creation based on an everyday item of clothing such as a fleece, a sweat suit or even a shirt. Your craft shop may have Halloween-themed items to help you decorate the costume and find patterned fabrics and motifs that will add to the effect. Visit your local library to find simple designs and ideas.

The history of Halloween is such a mixture of ancient folklore, harvest-time customs and magical associations that it's not hard to come up with fun costumes. The celebration comes with a wide range of traditions, superstitions and spooky images for fancy dress ideas that you can give an original twist. The 'haunted house' often plays a central role in a Halloween party setting, complete with a cast of witches, phantoms and goblins and an assortment of creepy effects.

Here are some 'spirited' Halloween costume ideas to get your imagination fired up:

a scary witch (of course!), with broomstick, hat and eerie make-up
a Halloween cat -- the traditional 'familiar' of the witch
a white and shimmering ghostly apparition
your favorite horror movie character
a pumpkin-inspired outfit

One of the most enjoyable things about Halloween is that you have carte blanche to dress entirely as you wish. So if you're planning a costume for a young child -- or if you just fancy giving horror a miss this year -- why not take your inspiration from a nursery rhyme or fairy tale? Whether it's a cartoon-based character or a variation on a storybook theme, there's a costume idea to suit every age at Halloween.

Are you looking for a choice of great Halloween costumes this year? Do you need ideas to make your Halloween party go with a swing?

Need a Halloween Costume?

Are you in need of a Halloween costume? Well this article offers some ideas if you are still racking your brains and thinking of what to wear this coming Halloween. First of all, you would need to do some prior planning before Halloween arrives to avoid some last minute mad scrambling for uniforms. For example, some stores may also run out of the design or costume which you like and hence at the last minute you would have to think of other ideas for your Halloween party. If you are thinking of making your own Halloween costume, you would also need to plan in advance as to what materials you need and buy them early so that you have some time to fix them together to form a costume too.

There is also an issue of the theme. If you are buying a Halloween costume for a Halloween party, you would have to buy a costume which fits in with the general theme of the party. You would be surprised but not all Halloween parties are about blood and gore. One of the most common themes I have seen recently is the super hero super villain theme. I guess it is relatively easy to get such super hero or villain costumes these days and besides there are so many to choose from. So having a Halloween costume party with the theme "Justice League" not only sounds fun but interesting too.

Once you have budgeted some time and money for the purchase of the Halloween costume and also figured out what you want to match the theme of the party, the next step would be to visit the costume store. For convenience, some people will just browse a store's offering online and make their purchase online too. And besides the normal Halloween stores, you may not have realized that bigger departmental stores such as target and Wal-Mart would carry Halloween costumes too. So make sure you shop around and check out the various models and designs both online and offline before you make a purchase decision.

There are so many Halloween costumes in the market that you will always be able to find a Halloween costume that is suitable for you. There is plenty of information available online too and you can always check out the internet for the latest in Halloween fashion. You can either get some ideas for costumes online or you can buy the costumes from online retail stores.

I hope my article has given you some great Halloween party ideas for tweens. I actually saw this new Wonder Woman costume that would make many girls go ga ga. I just hope that I do not see my daughter wearing that as it is too revealing!

How-to: Make a Repurposed Table Runner

table runner

Have you ever started a project, and it just gets gigantic by the end? A few weeks ago, we decided to rearrange the furniture in our living room, replacing a giant, 3-piece entertainment center with a smaller situation that wouldn’t look so looming in there. When we took the old one apart, it turned out that each piece on its own was super awesome! The base is now a window seat in my office, the top piece makes a perfect long shoe rack for the hallway, and the middle piece was just right for a kitchen sideboard. So, instead of rearranging the living room, we sort of rearranged the entire house!

The only trouble with this sideboard is that there were some visible screws at the top. Since this thing wasn’t designed to be a sideboard, there was no reason to cover them up. Now that it’s in the kitchen, though, I wanted to hide those ugly screws. A table runner to the rescue!

Of course, I could have hit up the big box store for a table runner, but where’s the fun in that? Plus, those store-bought situations tend to involve either conventional cotton or some type of polyester, and they’re made in far-off factories. Who knows what the labor practices are there, right? Instead, I hit my stash and whipped up this reclaimed table runner that’s exactly the right size for my new sideboard. Here’s how you can make a table runner of your own!

Materials

Fabric. I used a burlap coffee sack and a bed sheet from the thrift store. The size you cut will depend on the size you need, so you’ll need to raid your stash accordingly. I’ll get into sorting out measurements below!Measuring tape.Sewing machine, pins, thread

Directions

1. Get your measurements. I needed a finished runner that was about 13? wide by 80? long. Since I didn’t have any fabric that was those sizes, I went with 2 panels of burlap on the back and 2 panels of bedsheet fabric on the front. I cut each panel to 13.5? X 41?. See the math there? Add .5? to the width for your seam allowance, and for each panel, add 1? for seam allowance. Since mine was 80? long, each panel needed to be 80?÷2+1?, which is 41?.

2. Cut your fabric. Cut out your panels and iron them.

3. Pin your panels. Take the two pieces of fabric that are going to be the top, and pin the 13.5?  sides right sides together on one side. Sew that side together, so now you have one long piece, instead of two shorter panels. Do the same with the fabric you’re using for your backing. Iron everything again.

4. Pin your runner. Lay your back panel, right side up. Now, take your front panel and lay it right side down on top of it. Pin everything in place.

runner pinned

5. Time to sew! Stitch all the way around the edges of your runner leaving a 1/4? inseam. Make sure you also leave yourself a 3? gap, so that you can turn your runner right side out again.

6. Turn and finish your runner. Use that gap I just mentioned to turn your project right side out. Grab that iron again, and press the whole thing, so it’s laying flat. You’ll want to tuck in the unfinished edges of the gap that you left, so it looks all finished and lined up with the rest of the runner’s edge. Now, run it through the machine again to top stitch around the whole edge. This will help things stay flat and close that 3? gap that you left.

7. Optional quilty fun! If you want to make things extra fun, grab that runner one more time, and run it through the machine to quilt it. You can do standard straight lines, if you want, or be like me and do fun, random, wavy lines up and down your whole runner.

8. Iron again. I know, you’re sick of ironing, but do it one last time to set your stitches and give your runner a nice, professional look.

That’s it! Have you guys made a table runner or other linens before? I’d love to hear what you’re sewing in the comments!

Halloween Costumes for Babies: Ten Amazing Age Appropriate Outfits

Halloween is fast approaching and the search starts for most people around the world looking for the best Halloween costume for their babies. It seems that every Halloween, babies either get to wear the first-thing-mommy-saw-not-so-cool costume she bought from the mall or the local boutique or the super duper cool costume mommy got because she can't wear it for herself or wasn't able to wear it as a child (sounds familiar, right?). *wink*

Well, enough about all those other stuff and let's start with the ten Halloween costumes for babies that are a sure head-turner and also that's comfy for our little bundle of joy. Here are the top ten costumes for babies from newborns to toddlers:

The Pea Pod. This Halloween costume is very suitable for the newborns since these little angels need all the swaddling the world has to offer. It does not only provide a stylish appeal but most importantly it satisfies the baby's need for bonding.
The Turkey Platter. Since most babies lie down during the first and second month, this very unique Halloween costume for babies is a sure mouth-drooling work of art. It does not only work as a costume but also as a leg warmer as well.
The Caterpillar. Let's imagine that the baby is already three months old and by this time he/she can already hold up his/her head. This would be a very great chance to introduce to the baby costumes that come with head accessories such as headbands with antennas. Cute, right?!
The Jack-O-Lantern. This type of Halloween costume for baby is the best during this times of the baby's developmental milestone, because by the age of four months most babies can already support their upper chest thus the paramount position to expose the Jack-O-Lantern's face!
The Circus Clown. There's nothing cuter than a baby wearing a clown's costume and make-up! When the baby has already mastered the "social smile" between the second to the fifth month then it is more enticing since during these times the baby will now learn how to laugh and giggle (especially when in a very good mood!).
The Bunny Rabbit. Every time I see a cute, white and cuddly bunny rabbit it sure makes me smile, what more if a baby wears it as a Halloween costume! Let your adorable baby wear the bunny costume since by this time at six months the baby will start learning how to crawl and change from a supine to prone position. I can just imagine how lovely the sight would be!
The Wizard. The seventh month is the time when the baby can now grab things with their tiny hands without constantly dropping them. Take advantage of your baby's new talent by letting him or her hold props like wands (make sure they are made of soft and non-pointy materials like felt and rubber for safety purposes) along with their long gown adorned with silver stars.
The Grandfather's clock. Remember the walking clock from Beauty and the Beast? Imagine if a baby who just learned how to stand with support at eight to ten gets inside a Grandfather's clock costume with a matching fake mustache and a beard. Now here's a scenario: the baby stands up but suddenly fell down on his bottom. No problem! The costume also doubles as a bum protector. giggle
The Ballerina or the Tin Soldier. At eleven months to one year of age the baby will now learn to start walking. Why not make the most of your baby's new capabilities by letting him/her wear a costume he/she could strut around the house and neighbourhood with style. These costumes are so practical you could even let your child wear them during Christmas for The Nutcracker play!
The Superhero or the Disney Princess. At two years of age when children spend most of their time watching cartoons there is a great chance that your toddler will now request costumes as seen on TV as it is common during this age when the child likes to be Superman or Cinderella. (Let's just keep an eye on our little superheroes since they might think the costumes will give them the ability to fly or be invisible!)

There are still many possible Halloween costumes for babies. All you have to do is use your imagination and let the inner child in you decide. Be creative and be indigenous if you plan on making your baby's own costume and surely you and your family will have a lot of pictures to enjoy for the rest of your lives!
